The Best Summer Spots in Downtown San Diego & Golden Triangle

  |     |   Things to Do

Also known for its beautiful University City, the Golden Triangle has awesome leisure, culture, and nature opportunities for everyone.

Explore Balboa Park

University City is home to diverse natural beauty. From parks to ponds and even the ocean. The historic Balboa urban cultural park sits on 1,200-acres of land. That's enough to keep you and your loved ones occupied for days. Why not go bird watching in one of its many gardens, including the Japanese Friendship Garden, the beautiful blossoms in the Botanical Building, and Lily Pond, or go for a bike ride along the Florida Canyon Native Plant Preserve.

Children and adults can enjoy the Balboa Park Carousel, situated near the San Diego Zoo, which will also be open all summer. You can find this summer landmark downtown. The Balboa Park Carousel is free and open to the public from 12 to 4pm on Fridays.

Embrace the Local Culture

The San Diego Library is always a great place to go and grab some reading material. With their recent addition to the Maker Lab, they're even better. Check out one of the many activities for children or adults: swim in the heated pool, or just lay back on a chaise lounge.

The Balboa Theatre is downtown's living room. It's a great place to catch an independent film or enjoy live theatre. Alternatively, check out the art district. San Diego is home to some incredible galleries and art installations that are open all year round. Stop by 4th & J Park or Horton Plaza for an afternoon of creativity and inspiration.

For the summer, San Diego Partnership and the City of San Diego will be hosting free concerts on Saturdays all summer long. There are plenty of places to enjoy these shows, including 4th & J Park (free parking) or Waterfront Park.

Rediscover Nature

Start your day with a family-friendly walk along the beach with a "Beach Walk With a Biologist" tour. Meet a biologist who will teach you about the life that inhabits the shoreline. You'll learn all sorts of facts, like what's in tide pools and how to identify sea creatures through shells.

Next stop by the Port Pavilion, located on Broadway Pier; this park offers many activities for families and adults alike. Play catch with your friends or enjoy sitting outside at one of their many restaurants while watching boats pass by.

Then enjoy the Golden Triangle's seasonal farmers' market. The farmers' market offers an abundance of fresh produce, a variety of cooking demonstrations, as well as live music. Stop by every Thursday evening between 4pm to dusk.

The Golden Triangle is big, and there are lots of different ways to explore it. Downtown San Diego is home to more than 20,000 residents, and there are over 800 businesses in the University City area. Check out 4th and J Apartments so you can be close to it all. Whether you're staying for a while or settling down, San Diego has something for everyone.
